When I wrote my first piece on selling sourdough, which you can find here, I thought it would be a once-off topic and something to look back on as a ‘moment in time’. I’d read it and think, “Oh, remember that time when I sold a few loaves of sourdough?”
But it turns out that I have more to write and I need to document how selling sourdough has developed in the last week.
I’m still not sure if this is just a short period of selling sourdough to save enough for our family to go away to the mountains for a few nights or if it’s something long-term. But as I’ve already said, I’m sticking with it until orders dwindle enough for me to throw in the towel (or bread tin).
Last week Friday, I delivered a loaf to a customer who has supported me since the beginning. I thought nothing of it. The next day, I received a message from someone I know who runs a growing frozen meal business. She said, “Call me when you can, I have an idea.”
Turns out, she had been invited for dinner at my customer’s house and they had been served soup with my bread for their starters. She loved my bread!
The idea was that she would start advertising my bread when she sends out her weekly menu. I went away to think about the logistics of how this could work. The doubts crept in but I soon remembered my goal with selling sourdough: Follow this path until it’s obvious that you shouldn’t sell sourdough anymore.
So, we chatted and planned for starting bread deliveries next week.
Her menu went out yesterday afternoon. This morning, I woke up and wondered if she’d received any orders. My doubtful thoughts assumed that if she had received orders, I’d have known about it, so the idea must have fallen flat.
By 09:30, I gave her a call to ask. She had received 5 orders and wanted to give it ‘till lunchtime before finalising numbers because customers often order through the morning.
I’m happy with the 5 orders; it’s 5 more than I would normally have. And so, selling sourdough continues for another week.
