I’ve started supplying sourdough bread to a few people in our town.
I have the tendency to turn my passions into small businesses. Some of them grow, some of them fade away. I’m driven crazy by my tendency to monetize it all but this bread-baking story is different.
It started with me baking a thank-you loaf for a friend. The next day, she said over the phone that she’d like to buy bread from me. I replied, “I didn’t know I was selling bread” and she said, “yes, you are now!”
She was sitting next to a friend at a coffee shop and the friend piped up, “me too, please! Two loaves”. And that’s how it all began. An hour or two later, another friend joined the order list.
A few weeks later, they encouraged me to advertise to a group of fellow moms and I gained a few more customers. Then, my sister-in-law posted the ad on a Whatsapp group she is part of.
Each week, I send out a request for orders, and every time, I get an order or two … sometimes twelve.
I’m not sure if I’ll keep baking bread for people in town. I don’t know if I can keep it up and I don’t know if people will keep affording it. But I’ll keep doing it for as long as it feels right and I’m able to because it’s something that popped up out of nowhere and it has intrigued me ever since.
